Web search and images

Turn on the globe and Centrus searches the web for your message. Turn on the picture button and it draws an image. This guide covers both buttons, the tag settings that search the web for you, and what each costs.

What the two buttons do

Two buttons on the message bar take Centrus beyond your own files. The globe lets it search the web for the messages you send, so it can check a recall list or find a current datasheet. The picture button asks it to draw an image, such as a simple diagram for a starter pack. Centrus still looks in your files as well, so an answer can combine your Zone 3 panel manual with what it found online.

Your Zone 3 panel manual lists the detector heads as SD-200 optical units, fitted in 2023. I searched the web and found no recall or safety notice for the SD-200:

  • The Product safety alerts and recalls (GOV.UK) list has no entry for it.
  • The manufacturer's SD-200 product page shows firmware 2.4 as current, the version your manual quotes.

  1. 1The globe. Blue means web search is on for this chat.
  2. 2The picture button, for asking Centrus to draw an image.
  3. 3The working steps. Searching the web shows Centrus went online for this answer.
  4. 4Links to the pages it used, in the text of the answer. They open in a new tab.
  5. 5Sources, with Internet Search listed after your own files.

Both buttons are part of the web app. On WhatsApp and in Microsoft Teams there are no buttons: web search depends on the chat's tags, and pictures are not available. Both are covered further down.

Search the web with the globe

  1. 1Open the chat, or start a new one.
  2. 2Click the globe on the message bar. It turns blue, and pointing at it shows Disable web search.
  3. 3Type your question and send it. With the globe on, you do not need to write "search the web" in the message.
  4. 4To stop, click the globe again. It turns grey and shows Enable web search.

The globe is remembered for each chat, in the browser you used. It stays on for every message in that chat until you turn it off, even after you reload the page, and every other chat keeps its own setting. On another computer, or on your phone, the same chat starts with the globe off.

The globe is missing when the chat's AI model cannot search the web (see the models section further down). It is greyed out while an answer is still coming, in a chat that belongs to someone else, and in a chat whose tag has been deleted. See Choose what a chat can see.

Tell when an answer used the web

Open the steps at the top of an answer to see what Centrus did. A step called Searching the web means it went online for that answer. Centrus usually names the pages it relied on as links in the answer, which open in a new tab so you keep your place in the chat.

  3. 3Internet Search at the end of Sources, after the files from Train.

Internet Search under Sources means web search was switched on for that message, not that Centrus actually used a web page. Web pages are never listed by name under Sources. Look for the Searching the web step and the links in the text, and open the page to check it is current before you rely on it.

Let a tag search the web for you

A tag can turn on web search without anyone pressing the globe. That suits a tag such as Technical, where engineers often need a manufacturer's notice, and it is the only way to get web search on WhatsApp and in Teams. Admins can change it on any tag, and people with Train access can change it on the tags they hold.

  1. 1Open Settings and choose the Tags tab.
  2. 2In Tag Management, click the pencil at the end of the tag's row (Tag Settings).
  3. 3On the Settings tab of Edit Tag Settings, scroll past Tag Context to the two web search switches.
  4. 4Turn on Always Enable Web Search or Intelligent web search, then click Update Tag.

Always Enable Web Search

When enabled, web search will be automatically enabled for all messages in this tag. Users won't need to manually press the globe icon: real-time web information will always be available.

1
Intelligent web search

When enabled, web search is attached only if the message explicitly asks to search the web or look online. Organisation documents are still used first. On web chat the globe icon remains a manual override. WhatsApp has no globe: this is how those threads get web search when asked. If Always Enable Web Search is on, that setting takes precedence.

  1. 1Always Enable Web Search: every message in a chat with this tag searches the web.
  2. 2Intelligent web search: only messages that ask for the web in words search it.
  • Always Enable Web Search turns on web search for every message in any chat that carries the tag, on the web, WhatsApp and Teams. The globe stays grey, because the tag is doing the work, and it cannot be switched off from the chat.
  • Intelligent web search searches only when the message asks for it in words. The phrases that count are a web address (anything starting http or www), "search the web", "web search", "search online", "search the internet", "look online", "look it up online", "look it up on the web", "look on the web", "on the internet", "from the internet", "from the web", "google it" and "google this". A message that only says "latest" or "look it up" does not count. It works on the web as well, and the globe still works alongside it.
  • If both switches are on, Always Enable Web Search wins.

For each message, Centrus checks in this order and stops at the first match. A chat with two tags searches the web if either tag allows it. For more on what a tag controls, see Control who sees what with tags and Tag context.

Which models can search and draw

Every model in the AI model list can search the web and generate images, including the recommended GPT-5.6 Terra. The list shows this for each model with a globe for Web Search and a picture for Image Generation: a green tick means the model can do it, a red cross means it cannot.

Image Generation
  1. 1Web Search. A tick means the globe appears in chats on this model.
  2. 2Image Generation. A tick means the picture button appears.

Some older models are no longer in the list but can still be set on an existing account. O3, O4 Mini, O1 and O3 Mini cannot search the web or draw, and GPT-4o and GPT-4o Mini can search the web but cannot draw. A chat uses its owner's personal AI model, or the organisation's model if they have not chosen one. If either button is missing, open the gear on the chat and choose AI Model to see which model it uses, and see Choose the AI model.

Create an image

  1. 1Click the picture button on the message bar, next to the globe. It turns purple.
  2. 2Describe the picture in your message: what it shows, the labels it needs, and the shape you want, such as landscape or portrait.
  3. 3Send it. The steps show Generating an image while Centrus draws, and the picture appears in the answer once it is finished.
  4. 4Click the picture button again when you have what you need.

The picture button stays on after you send. Every later message in that chat can produce another picture, and each one costs extra credits, until you turn the button off, open a different chat or reload the page.

A few words in your message change how the picture is made, for that message only:

  • Quality. "Low quality", "draft quality" or "quick draft" uses Low. "Medium quality" or "standard quality" uses Medium. "High quality", "high resolution" or "HQ" uses High. "Extra high" or "ultra-high" uses Extra high. "Max quality", "best quality" or "highest quality" uses Max. Without any of these, your quality setting applies (see Image model, quality and credits, below).
  • Background. "Transparent background", "no background" or "cutout" gives a see-through picture, which suits an icon for a report. "White background" or "solid background" keeps it solid.
  • Image skills. If your organisation has an image skill, Centrus follows it while the picture button is on, including its house style and its size. With more than one, name the skill in your message. See Skills.

Without an image skill, Centrus chooses the shape to suit the request. Every picture is a PNG file and is charged on its own, so ask for one picture at a time.

Find, save and check a picture

The picture appears under the answer's text, at the shape it was made in. It stays in the chat, so anyone who can open the chat can see it later. In the chat list, a reply that is only a picture shows as Generated image.

Download image saves the picture as a PNG named after the start of its prompt, such as A_clean__simple_technical_diagram_of_a_sealed_cent_1.png. If the download is blocked, the picture opens in a new tab instead, and you can save it from there. Clicking the picture itself does nothing: unlike a file Centrus builds, it does not open in the preview pane (see Files Centrus makes for you).

The prompt under Image details is Centrus's own fuller description of what you asked for. Read it when a picture comes out differently from what you expected: it shows what Centrus understood.

Change a picture or try again

A picture has no edit or regenerate button. To change one, keep the picture button on and say what to change in your next message, such as "make the expansion vessel red and number each part". Centrus draws a new picture under the new answer. The first picture stays where it was, so you can compare them and download the one you prefer.

  2. 2Organisation image quality, with the extra credits each level adds per picture.
  3. 3Personal image model and Personal image quality, which override the organisation's choice for your own account.

Each picture adds credits on top of the chat model's usual credits for the message:

  • Low: 1 credit.
  • Auto, the default, and Medium: 2 credits.
  • High: 4 credits.
  • Extra high: 6 credits.
  • Max: 10 credits.

Web search adds no credits of its own, so a message costs the same whether it searches the web or not. On GPT-5.6 Terra, for example, a message costs 2 credits, and the same message with a High quality picture costs 6. Picture credits are only added when a picture is actually made. See Credits and browser minutes.

On a phone

On a phone, or in any browser window narrower than 768 pixels, the buttons on the message bar fold into one menu button on the left. Tap it to open the list, then tap the globe or the picture button. They turn blue and purple, as on a computer.

The phone's browser keeps its own globe settings, so a chat where you turned the globe on at your desk starts with it off on your phone.

Limits and messages

Before a message is sent with the picture button on, Centrus checks there are enough credits left for the answer and one picture at the chosen quality. Near the end of the month, that check can stop a picture request when a plain message would still go through.

Good uses for field service teams

Web search is most useful for facts that change outside your business and are not in your files yet. Pictures suit simple visuals you would otherwise sketch by hand.

A regulation update

Search online for changes to the fire alarm servicing guidance since 2024.

A simple diagram

Draw a labelled diagram of a sealed heating system for new starters.

  • Recalls and safety notices. Check a detector, boiler or appliance against manufacturer and GOV.UK notices before a service visit.
  • Regulation and guidance updates. Ask whether guidance has changed since your own procedure was written, then check the official source before you change an SOP.
  • Datasheets and manuals. Find the current datasheet for a part an engineer has in front of them, then upload it to Train so it is in your files next time.
  • Simple diagrams. A labelled layout for a starter pack, a sketch of a plant room for a toolbox talk, or an icon for a report.

Check anything safety-critical against the original source. A generated diagram is an illustration, not a technical drawing, so do not use one for installation or compliance work.
